A stylish ‘do for a party may look effortless, but requires time, effort and skilful hands. If you’re out of time and a trip to the salon isn’t on the cards, these guides to getting your hair done from three top local stylists – Sam Chok from Chez Vous Hair, Michael Chiew from Hairloom and Jimmy Yap from Kenaris Salon – will help. By Isabel Ong.
“Many women love to style their hair into big, loose curls for parties, but Singapore’s weather is extremely humid and most loose curls won’t last for more than 3 hours. Letting your hair down, especially at outdoor parties, may be disastrous as hair might become oily and start to clump together. A simple updo will last you through the night without any worries. The one I am recommending takes you only 10 minutes and is not too formal or over-the-top.” – Sam Chok, salon director of Chez Vous
1. Apply a small amount of Redken Full Effect 04 All-Over Nourishing Mousse (or one of these alternatives) on damp hair and blow dry. This creates volume without stickiness.
2. Create and secure a horseshoe section (aka the section of hair at the crown of your head) and backcomb hair to create sufficient volume.
3. Tie the rest of your hair below the horseshoe section into a tight ponytail.
4. Release and tie half of the horseshoe section into a loose ponytail.
5. Twist and turn sections of the tight ponytail, and secure it into a loose chignon with bobby pins.
6. Secure the loose ponytail from the horseshoe section into the chignon using bobby pins.
7. Twist and secure remaining hair at the horseshoe section into the loose chignon with bobby pins and U-pins. Let down your fringe any way you like.
“Want to dance the night away (and still look polished)? Get an all-hair-up look with peekaboo braids.” – Michael Chiew, leading stylist at Hairloom
1. Braid both sides of your hair, with one braid on each side.
2. Leave fringe untouched.
3. Tie up your hair into a high ponytail along with the braids.
4. Use a flat iron to create a little wave for your fringe.
“The party-worthy look I’m recommending is inspired by Emma Watson’s ‘do, and involves creating a short hairstyle with long hair. This is trending for Spring Summer ’16, and you can make it more sophisticated by adding a hair accessory. It’s best suited for a formal event or dinner.” – Jimmy Yap, senior stylist at Kenaris Salon
1. Tie hair up into a ponytail.
2. Twist it upwards into a bun.
3. Secure with bobby pins and add a pretty hair accessory.
