You may not have a 10-step beauty routine like our beauty editor, but it’s still important to get the basics covered. Here, Singapore beauty trainer Elaine Lim, who represents American beauty brand Philosophy and Monaco-based brand Lancaster, shares five things to look out for. By Isabel Ong.
“It will help you to determine the texture of the skincare products that goes on your skin. Your skin type has an impact on how the product interacts with your skin. For example, dry skin has a low level of sebum and does not maintain oil easily. Gentle cleansing products and a nourishing moisturiser are therefore necessary and essential to help relieve the “tight” sensation in skin. If you use an oil-absorbing product or products with high amounts of alcohol, it will dry out your skin, causing discomfort and affecting the absorption of other active ingredients.”
“Pick the one with a broad-spectrum of sun protection, i.e. high levels of UVA and UVB protection. Otherwise, all the work you’ve put into making sure your routine suits your skin type will be for nothing. I recommend Lancaster’s Skin Therapy Day Shield SPF30 PA+++ ($67), targeted at protecting skin against environmental stresses like infrared rays and air pollution. Fortified with a broad-spectrum high-level UVA and UVB filters, this sunscreen absorbs surface UV radiation while leaving the skin feeling lightweight with a non-greasy texture.“
“Day-care products that have Vitamin C or Vitamin E will help to protect your skin against environmental aggressions. For example, Lancaster’s 365 Cellular Elixir Youth Prolongation Serum ($85) contains a DNA action complex and antioxidants that protect skin from free radicals.”
“That’s because these two ingredients maximise skin’s regeneration process. One to try: Philosophy’s newest product, the Ultimate Miracle Worker Night ($120). (The two-in-one serum moisturiser) combines active plant cells with the nourishing benefits of a cream to help reduce the signs of ageing while you sleep.”
“Always do a patch test for compatibility prior to using any new products, especially if you have extremely sensitive and allergic skin. The side of the neck is a good starting point for true compatibility because it’s thinner and generally more reactive (when the product is applied on skin).”
