Braids appearing on the runway aren’t new, but Spring/Summer 2017’s take on it is a lot less girly, and a lot more grunge-y and edgy.
Gone are the loosely woven single plaits and “undone” versions. In their place: Double braids (a style that members of the Kardashian clan have favoured) and tight cornrows, as well as quadruple plaits on the back and sides of models’ heads.
Check out the brands that took braids to a whole new level in our gallery below:
The double braids were tied high on the back of models’ heads, giving the illusion that there was only a single plait when viewed from their side profiles.
Fringe was left messy and unkempt and given a wet look (as if models had just left a sweaty gym sesh).
The hairstyle also gave models a youthful, schoolgirl vibe, complementing Rocha’s S/S ’17 collection of poufy, patterned frocks.
The New York-based label sent models down the runway in four Dutch braids, two running down the nape of their necks and two along the sides of their heads.
Fly-away hair was left untreated to give models a “just-got-out-of-bed” look.
In our eyes: It’s snazzier, fresher and way cooler than conventional braids.
South Korean brand Son Jung Wan gave models tight cornrows – but with a delicious twist.
Braids were kept only on the crowns of models’ heads, while the remaining hair was teased out and curled.
The result: Voluminous, bouncy textured curls that were partly afro-inspired and partly an homage to the ’70s and Studio 54 (which also served as the inspiration for the brand’s pieces).
