The 700 sq ft salon’s name – S.A.D’s Hair Design – might be a little unwieldy, but its modern and sophisticated interior more than makes up for it. Boasting monochromatic hues and raw concrete flooring, what takes centre-stage is the framed artworks of neatly coiffed animals imported from Japan, which are displayed prominently against its floor-to-ceiling glass windows.

The brains behind this concept? Its owner Katsuhito Akimichi, who previously set up two hair salons in japan (Diptych and Switch in Kansai prefecture) that have a similar look and feel. Diptych’s interior design has even garnered recognition in the design world – it was awarded “Best commercial/service space” at Japan’s DSA Design Awards three years ago.

Besides its achingly cool aesthetic, the space really does function as a salon – and an ultra-indulgent one at that. Black blinds are installed at its windows for extra privacy, while customers sit in futuristic-looking electric chairs designed by Takara Belmont, a manufacturer of cutting-edge salon furniture. These chairs enable the salon to put in place a “no getting up from your seat” policy as they allow hair to be shampoo-ed and washed in that very same chair.

Another way the salon positions itself differently? There are only two chairs available in the main styling area, and one housed in a private VIP room for a one-on-one consultation on all hair-related matters. But for all these luxe trappings, hair services here are surprisingly affordable – a haircut for women is priced at $100, while perms start from $180 and hair colouring starts at $140. #01-01 RV Point, 233 River Valley Road, tel: 6235-0570
