The Look: Preppy Cheerleader

TEXT YUEN YI YING MODEL PHOTO SHOWBIT.COM PRODUCT PHOTOS VEE CHIN ART DIRECTION YIP SIEW FEI

A tousled side-ponytail is youthful and relaxed. Dexter Ng, creative director of Next Salon, shows how it’s done.

How To
1. Apply thickening lotion or mousse evenly through clean, damp hair.
2. Blow-dry completely. Ruffle as you go to create texture, and blow fringe up and back so it doesn’t flop forward later.
3. Tease small sections from fringe and crown at a time with a fine-tooth comb for height.
4. Spread a pea-sized amount of texturising wax from mid-length. Scrunch for a slightly mussed look. Smooth strands back from face.
5. Spray on a liquid hairspray to set the texture and volume – it offers stronger hold than an aerosol one.
6. Lightly tease through hair length with the comb for a tousled effect. Curl ends with a pair of small barrel tongs for bounce.
7. Pull hair into a high side-ponytail and secure with a strong elastic band.
8. If the ponytail looks too frizzy, gently smooth down the side and length by skimming the surface with a paddle brush.
9. Mist with an aerosol spray for added hold.

To Good Health
Most women here seem to think using just moisturiser is enough, let alone adding a pre-serum booster to their routine. So why is L’Oreal launching one? According to the brand, the most basic principle of skincare is giving it a healthy start. Natasha Chiam reports.

Turn up the lights
Neon lips don’t have to be a tacky relic from the ’80s. This season’s are still bright, but rich and matte, not fluorescent, and best worn with natural-looking eyes.

Hair Apparent
When it comes to makeup brushes, the key thing is how soft they are. And cult Japanese brand Artisan & Artist, famous for its calligraphy brush heritage, really knows how to make them oh-so-soft (if we had blankets made from them, we’d never get out of bed). How? Because each hair is placed and cut by hand at a specific angle so there’s zero scratch. Bonus point: All natural hairs are cruelty free, which means no animals are killed or hurt to produce the brushes. At Schmidt Marketing Flagship Store.
