Fashion’s obsession with cropped locks continued on the S/S ’18 runways with more options and experimentation – in short, even more liberation. We got three up-and-coming hair gurus to give three women the “chop”.
The Woman: Design student Gao Fu Li
The Hair Expert: Vin Phua, senior hairstylist at Air Salon
What Phua says “This hairstyle would better suit a sharper face. If you have a rounder shape, keep your hair to chin length – it gives the illusion of a slimmer face. If your hair is on the thin side, blow-drying when it’s damp using a cool setting will help create the volume that’s needed to maintain the graphic shape of the haircut.” Coat, Gucci. Earrings, Gao’s own
The Woman: Marketing student Ruth Hiew
The Hairstylist: Nathaniel Zheng, creative designer at Yann Beyrie Paris Hair Salon
What Zheng says “You do need to cut some hair, but only at the crown (the point is to create a bob, under which you can tuck the rest of your hair into). To style this at home, gather the bottom (read: longer) part of your locks and tie them into a French twist, before concealing and securing it under the ‘bob’ with bobby pins. Some styling product – I recommend moulding clay or hairspray – helps maintain the look through the day.” Top, Gucci
The Woman: Communications student Cheryl Yip
The hairstylist: Junz Loke, hairstylist at Hairloom Salon
What Loke says “This should be a chin-length cut (so that it still looks womanly), but do away with layers (as it looks more modern). If you have a longer face, I’d additionally suggest bangs, while those with a rounder face can go for a middle parting for the illusion of a slimmer face. To style it, use a flat iron to create some waves, before applying a texturising spray to give hair some volume (like here on Yip). It also reduces frizziness.” Jacket, Chanel
