Lightweight, breathable, comfortable on the skin, semi-matte, and pore-blurring with a soft radiant finish … The list of claims proffered by the latest Shu Uemura Petal Skin Fluid Foundation is certainly impressive. And should it live up to said claims, this could well be the perfect foundation for a fairly large range of skin types in Singapore’s hot and humid weather.

Right off the bat, the foundation has a pretty decent shade range (11 colours) that’s well-tailored to suit Asian skin tones and undertones. As much as I’d love more dark shades, I am surprised to find varying depths of yellow or pink undertones in the range; just about everyone should be able to find a close enough match.

And as they say, a little goes a long way: Just one pump of foundation was enough to cover my entire face, and I still had some product left over on the back of my hand, which is a huge plus in my book. We always want something that’s lightweight and gives you good coverage without you having to waste too much of it.

That petal 55 foundation brush works like an absolute dream, too. It blends out the foundation in a matter of seconds without any streakiness, but on the other hand, it’s quite pricey. Of course, as with any other foundation, you’re free to use your own brush or sponge to get the job done.

I’d say it provides a good medium coverage that can be built up slightly, but you will need concealer to cover up serious acne spots or significant pigmentation if you want more flawless coverage.

It didn’t settle into my pores or fine lines and I was pleasantly surprised to find that my pores looked less obvious even with the foundation drying to a soft radiant natural finish. If you have oily skin, you’ll probably have to set the foundation with a little translucent powder if you want it to last all day, but on its own the foundation doesn’t feel sticky or tacky to the touch once it’s dried.

Throughout the rest of the day, the foundation wore exceptionally well. Even though my face got quite shiny towards the end of the day (I didn’t set my face with any powder for the sake of the wear test), there were no unsightly spots to show that the foundation had started to break down. It wore off in a more natural and flattering way, which is what we want in a foundation we need to spend an entire day in.

Overall, it’s a great everyday foundation for most skin types, though if you have oily skin I’d recommend a good primer, powder and setting spray to keep everything locked. It does have hydrating properties which make it a great pick if you have more dehydrated skin, but I will definitely recommend a good moisturiser or hydrating primer beneath it if you do.

The Shu Uemura Petal Skin Fluid Foundation retails for $68, and the petal 55 foundation brush retails for $80, available now.
