The mecca of film festivals, the Cannes Film Festival, kicks off today in the picturesque south of France. Apart from the star-studded red carpet, the 70th anniversary of this prestigious film festival also promises a slew of high quality films from around the world. This indie crime-drama film directed by the Safdie brothers stars Robert Pattinson and follows a bank robber’s efforts to evade being caught. The film also stars Ben Safdie and Jennifer Jason Leigh, with a US release date set for 11 Aug.

Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos reunites with Irish actor Colin Farrell for the second time after the dark comedy The Lobster, which won the Jury Prize at the 2015 Cannes. This time, the thriller-drama revolves around a surgeon whose life begins to fall apart after befriending a sinister boy.

The controversial director is back with a romantic thriller with a script by Olivier Assayas. Emmanuelle Seigner, who is also Polanski’s real-life wife, stars as a famous author who finds inspiration in a developing friendship with a mysterious woman played by Eva Green.

The queen of indie cool returns with a thriller-drama based on the book of the same name. The film also stars Colin Farrell, this time as an injured solider, being cared for by a group of women from an all-female Southern boarding house – played by Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst and Elle Fanning – who vies for his affection.

The acclaimed Austrian director is most famed for 2012’s Amour, which was nominated for five Oscars. His 12th and newest film is a drama set in Calais, featuring a bourgeois French family with the refugee crisis as a backdrop. The cast includes French actress Isabelle Huppert, who shot to international fame last year with Elle, which earned her an Oscar nomination.
