Everyone knows Britney Spears will be returning to Singapore (after an absence of nearly 20 years) for a one-night performance (June 30) at the Indoor Stadium. While people have been complaining that the tickets, priced between $188 and $568, are too exorbitant, we’re pretty sure plenty will turn up for the pop princess’ gig.
Brit Brit may not be a Zendaya or a Rihanna when it comes to style, but she’s still had her fair share of memorable looks over the years. So, while brushing up on your Toxic lyrics, take a look back at Spears back in the day.
#1: Teen Choice Awards, 1999
— Angel G. (@AngelGrrllX) August 10, 2014
A fresh-faced 18-year-old at this point, Spears went for the matchy matchy look (huge in the ’90s and ’00s), and entirely in pink. Both trends (pink and matchy matchy) are back in a big way this year, which shows that the influence of Britney Spears #neverdies.
#2: Oops I Did It Again music video, 2000

One of the earliest pioneers of the latex trend so popular with the likes of the Kardashians and Beyonce, Spears donned a cherry red latex catsuit for the music video of Oops I Did It Again, where she played a temptress from Mars, complete with shimmery silver eyeshadow and backup dancers decked out in metallic jumpsuits. With the resurgence of sci-fi influences in fashion this fall, this song couldn’t be more apt.
#3: MTV Video Music Awards, 2000
14 years before Rihanna made the “naked” look a thing, Britney was already rocking the look at the 2000 MTV VMA awards in a nude embellished two-piece ensemble.
#4: American Music Awards, 2001
This denim-on-denim look will always pop up somewhere if you’re going to do a piece on Britney Spears. The Brad and Angelina of their time, Spears and Justin Timberlake, both 19 at the time, turned up at the American Music Awards in this infamous matching denim look. With Americana denim being a key trend this fall, this look will haunt them forever.
#5: MTV Video Music Awards, 2001
There really wasn’t much to this outfit (the colours and embellishments are so early ’00s) until you see the albino burmese python, but Spears was carrying it as if it’s just an accessory – which it was, for the shock value.
Will she be doing anything as dramatic as bringing a snake for her Singapore performance? I doubt so – but that’s a good thing anyway; animals aren’t really accessories.
#6: Toxic music video, 2004
Remember that skimpy, futuristic air stewardess outfit Spears donned for the “Toxic” music video? Turns out it was by none other than Jeremy Scott, who is currently Moschino’s head honcho and a favourite designer of the likes of Katy Perry and Miley Cyrus now. Spears, it seems, was light years ahead.
#7: Out and about
Juicy Couture velour tracksuits may be commonly associated with Paris Hilton (who also appears to be making a comeback), but Britney Spears was also another big fan – so much so that her bridesmaids all wore pink Juicy tracksuits to Spears’ wedding in 2004.
#8: Out and about
Newsboy caps were a huge part of Spears’ outfits, whether for formal events or daily outfits – which current “of-the-moment” celebs like Bella Hadid have taken to copying enthusiastically. In fact, we’d say Spears’ first outfit – the one with the furry cap and jacket, wouldn’t look out of place even now – it even looks like it could belong to Miu Miu’s fall 2017 show.
#9: MTV Video Music Awards, 2003
Of course, we can’t round up this list without including this frothy white number that Spears wore for the 2003 MTV VMA Awards, the one where she shared the stage with Madonna and Christina Aguilera and performed together to Madonna’s “Like A Virgin”, before the latter would go on to kiss both Spears and Aguilera, accounting for one of music’s most controversial performances.
