News flash: Bananas are in next season. Not the fruit, literally, but the colour that is synonymous with it. We’ve talked about neons (and orange in particular) being big for Spring 2017, but yellow is another cousin of the citrus family that’s more than claiming its fair share of the runway.
One of the prettiest collections across the whole fashion month, Rochas made a very solid case for colour-blocking – mixing emerald greens, periwinkle blues, dusky pinks, mulberry purples and, most prominently, a sharp, tangy lemon yellow to great effect.
Dries Van Noten went for a more royal effect – embracing Edwardian-style necklines and a full tone-on-tone look (the stunning maxi hobble-skirt will probably be a top seller).
Too wary of the bright cheeriness of yellow? Then try the more honeyed shades in the family, such as marigold, goldenrod and mustard. As seen at Chloe and French minimalist supremo Lemaire, the richer tones are warmer and more versatile, close to earth toness while still providing a unique point of interest.
Alternatively, for those who prefer a lighter touch, why not go for chiffon yellow, as demonstrated at Prada and Lemaire? When the directional Miuccia Prada gets behind something, you can bet it will be copied endlessly next season. And for Spring 2017, she opts for chiffon yellow that’s bedazzled and trimmed at the hem with feathers. This delicate, wispy hue will typically flatter those with a darker complexion; fairer types will need to navigate it carefully as it might wash you out.
We understand that yellow might not be the first colour one usually goes for, so if you’re feeling apprehensive, accessories are a great way of cluing into the trend, such as Lemaire’s cute camera bag (right) and a fantastic pair of banana-yellow cropped pants as seen with this fashion week attendee (left). She aces this look by tempering the bright hue with more subdued, monochromatic pieces, allowing her pants to be the centrepiece.
