Ready, Steady, Go
One way to achieve that New Year resolution of being more efficient with time? Get some long-lasting makeup so that you don’t have to keep touching up (duh). These three new lipsticks promise to be stayers.
(From left) For Foolproof Red: Fenty Beauty Stunna Lip Paint, $36
This bold crimson, which according to Rihanna was tested to look flattering on everyone, dries down for budge-proof colour that feels lightweight on puckers, yet won’t feather after hours of wear.
Supposed to last: 12 hours
For A Party Shine: Kat Von D Everlasting Glimmer Veil, $35
With the same technology that’s in Von D’s popular Everlasting Liquid Lipstick, this does away with the constant reapplication that’s usually needed when it comes to glittery gloss. In nine shades, including two bold blues.
Supposed to last: 24 hours
For Elegance With An Edge: Marc Jacobs Le Marc Liquid Lip Crayon, $38
Rich and creamy, this allows for a precise one-swipe application, melting into lips to leave a high-pigment, liquid lipstick-style finish with a glamorous shimmer.
Supposed to last: 16 hours
In two years, Allies Of Skin has gained global devotees with just four products. Here, founder Nicolas Travis on why you’ll be into the next three he’s added.
The Promise Keeper Facial, $159
“The traditional approach to treating blemishes (dry them out) can actually cause irritation. This, instead, first eradicates acne-causing bacteria, then brightens and fades dark spots left behind by past blemishes – all while boosting moisture levels and preventing future breakouts.”
Fresh Slate Brightening Cleanser + Masque, $59
“I like using this as a morning cleanse to start the day with radiant skin. Massage onto damp skin, then leave it on for 10 minutes to allow the water-activated vitamin C to get to work. In the evenings, use this as your second cleanse, leaving it on for a few minutes in the shower for added illuminating benefits.”
Fresh Slate Purifying Cleanser + Masque, $59
“Unlike traditional clay masques that can make your face feel really tight, this melts into skin. Use it as part of a double cleanse at the end of the day, to fully get rid of dirt and grime. If you wear stubborn, waterproof makeup, use a makeup remover first. If you don’t, you can use this as your first cleanse, followed by the Brightening Cleanser. Leave it on for 10 minutes to allow the salicylic acid to penetrate deeper into skin.”
The reduced number of long weekends in 2018 only makes advance planning for nearby getaways even more important. Next month, Como Uma Canggu (above) opens in the up-and-coming village on Bali’s south coast that’s already a favourite of surfers with its shore breaks. Besides getting on board the increasingly It sport (the resort has partnered Australian-based company Tropicsurf to create “luxury surfing” programmes), guests can recharge at Como Shambhala Retreat, which offers Asian-inspired therapies such as the highly satisfying Deep Tissue Massage. Add yoga, pilates and Crossfit sessions – all to the view of the Indian Ocean – before retreating to one of the modern, tastefully designed rooms (there are 119 in total, including duplex penthouses). We’re so ready.
Trust French perfumer Serge Lutens to take something as obscure as the childhood memory of losing one’s pearly whites, and turn it into one of the most intriguing scents out now. Dent de Lait ($280, Escentials), which translates to “milk teeth”, has notes of creamy almond milk, coconut and musk to conjure up a sense of sweet, powdery innocence, before a sharp aldehyde kicks in – meant to recall the metallic taste of blood when a tooth pops. Just plain weird or nostalgically comforting? Take a whiff and decide for yourself.
The Great Cover Up
Few treats are as easy yet feel-good as slapping on a facial mask, then letting it work its magic. Mamonde’s range of four Flower Facial Masks ($28 each) come in generous 100ml tubs, with each offering a different floral active, like instantly calming calendula or purifying rose. L’Oreal Paris’ first ever Pure Clay Mask ($14.90) with Moroccan lava clay is not only wallet-friendly but also deeply cleanses pores. And if you’re on the road, Clarins has debuted a sheet mask, the Super Restorative Instant Lift Serum ($160 for a box of five individually packed sheets), which gives an immediate boost of radiance to tired skin.
