From the most popular skincare items to the age they actually start putting on makeup, we talk to three Korean beauty experts (Hera brand managers Youjin Choi and Seunghee Lee, as well as the beauty brand's chief makeup artist Jason Lee) on what's trending and what beauty really means in South Korea.

The must-have skincare products

Youjin Choi (YC): “A water essence (which I feel is the most effective product in any K-beauty ritual), serum and cream are the three must-have products for Koreans. But personally, I like to add a mask to my routine too.”

They never forget using a lip tint

YC: “When Korean women don’t have time for makeup, they normally only use a lip product, which is why lip tints have been one of the best-selling products here.”

The age they start dolling up

SL: “It would probably come as a huge surprise to you but these days, children who are aged nine or 10 already start putting on makeup. Starting from the age of five years old, they start playing with these beauty toy kits. In Korea, it is normal for grown women to think that they have to wear makeup before going out, out of courtesy to others. So it has become a culture where children grow up and see their moms applying makeup.”
