Inspired by black-and-white movies where the actresses removed their makeup with what might have been cold cream, Sylvie Chantecaille, founder of her namesake brand, created the Rose de Mai Cleansing Balm. It may seem pricey at $154 for a 75ml jar, but its benefits – plus, the fact that a little goes a long way – makes it a worthy buy.
The Chantecaille Rose de Mai Cleansing Balm removes makeup and sunscreen as it cleanses, without stripping skin of its natural oils and moisture. Plus, it calms inflamed skin and fights environmental stressors.
It is also free of pore-clogging mineral oils and ethylhexyl palmitate, using instead, antioxidant-rich botanical oils – up to 80 per cent of the formula. Its star is the Rose de Mai, known for its rich, skin-renewing antioxidants.
“I love a super-practical product like this. This balm takes everything off with a clean, refreshing sweep and the texture is so silky and delicious. If you’re not near a sink, no need to rinse after – you can take it anywhere. The result is just comfortable, soft, and naturally refreshed clean skin. I was inspired by actresses in old black-and-white movies that sat at their vanities and removed makeup with a balm, but I wanted to modernize that concept and make it very Chantecaille by adding our Rose de Mai.”

And in a Covid-19 world where antimicrobial properties get our thumbs up, there’s tamanu oil to combat dirt and grime, as well as prevent dehydration and photo-ageing.
To use, massage the pearlescent pale pink cream into skin and emulsify with a few drops of water. Then, rinse off or wipe away with a damp cotton pad.
We used the Chantecaille Rose de Mai Cleansing Balm in various ways – twice, when removing makeup; balm then cleansing milk; and balm after micellar water or cleansing oil. Our skin felt super clean every time, but not tight or dry. And after using it for more than a week, we spotted no breakouts or clogged pores.
The Chantecaille Rose de Mai Cleansing Balm is available at Tangs at Tang Plaza and Takashimaya D.S.
