Estee Lauder's Global Makeup Artist From Korea Gives Us The Low Down On Everything Lips

We had the opportunity to speak one-on-one with Alex Cho, Estee Lauder's Global Makeup Artist from Korea, at the ongoing Lip Lounge pop-up that's happening 'till July 18th at Paragon. He serves us the truth on all lip trends and tips.

What are the three 2019 lip trends that every woman should try on their lips now, and why?

Alex Cho (AC): “Hydrated, full lips that are glossy. For this, lip care is the most important thing, followed by volume, then glossiness. In terms of colours, classic red will be an ongoing trend throughout the four seasons. A lot of other feminine colours like pink and pinkish corals (but not orangey ones) are trendy now.”

The smudged K-Beauty look seems to be getting bigger. How can we recreate this look and pull it off?

AC: “After you very carelessly apply lipstick to your full lips, use your cotton pads to dab around the boundaries of your lips. In Korea, this smudged look is called an ‘after-kiss lip look’, so one way to achieve this look is to kiss someone! And if you don’t have anyone to kiss, you can kiss your puppy, cat, or the back of your hand.”

What are three innovative lip products that you find have completely changed the lip game, and why?

AC: “First, the Pure Color Envy Lip Repair Potion from Estee Lauder. The second was a sheer matte texture lipstick that Estee Lauder launched two years ago called Pure Color Envy Sheer Matte Sculpting Lipstick. Usually, mattes are very thick but the lab combined the sheer and matte textures of the lipstick together, which was quite innovative. And lastly, the Pure Color Desire Matte Lipstick by Estee Lauder. Of course, a lot of brands will want to say that their matte lipsticks are matte yet moisturising, but it’s actually true for this one.”

What’s the secret to making lipstick long-lasting and transfer-proof?

AC: “The first tip is to put foundation on your lips as a base – just a little amount because we don’t want cakey lips. Then, apply lipstick as you normally would and blot your lips with a tissue. That’ll really help you to make it long-lasting and vibrant as well. After you’ve blotted with the tissue, apply the lip colour once more. This ensures that it won’t be too thick when you go over with the second layer again. Lastly, use concealer to clean up the edges and make it more defined.”

How often should women exfoliate their lips?

AC: “In general, once or twice a week. However, it really depends on each individual and how much they need it. The Estee Lauder Pure Color Envy Smoothing Sugar Scrub has super fine crystal beads, so it really isn’t a harsh scrub. In fact, it’s so gentle that you can use it as often as you like.”

You’ve worked with so many women over the years. Through that experience, what have you discovered is the lip care step that most women neglect?

AC: “Most women neglect the lip serum. The Pure Color Envy Lip Repair Potion didn’t exist before so I think a lot of women are unfamiliar with this product, but this is my recommendation. It provides deeper hydration and revitalises. If you put on a thicker layer, it’s a great overnight mask as well. In the day, use this as the step before your lipstick. In the night, apply this to bare clean lips. A lot of women miss out on lip care, rather than the lip colour when it comes to makeup. So before the lip makeup, emphasis should be on the lip care like having scrubs, maintaining soft supple lips with moisturisers, balms, serums, and glosses. Actually, our lips are a lot more sensitive and delicate as compared to the skin on our face, but nobody actually applies SPF or sun protection to the lips.”

What’s the trick to instantly getting pouty lips?

AC: ” The Pure Color Envy Lip Volumizer. For this, you have to remember to conceal around the corner of your lips. As it’s glossy, it’s more inclined to get messy. You want voluminous lips but not messy ones.”

We’re all for achieving plump, juicy lips but when does it cross the line to become too much?

AC: “When you’re applying lipstick or lip liner, going 10 per cent over your actual lip size or thickness is okay, but some people tend to over-achieve and go overboard to let’s say 20 per cent. 10 per cent over your actual lip thickness makes your lips look prettier, plumper, and more natural.”

What are your favourite Estee Lauder products that every woman needs in their beauty arsenal?

AC: “The Double Wear Stay-in-Place Makeup, the Advanced Night Repair Serum – because it’s not only suitable for Singapore – but for all types of weather. Lastly, the Pure Color Envy Lip Repair Potion that’s very popular in Korea as well. I’ve seen it sell like hotcakes. Funnily, I seldom get to use it because my wife loves to use mine.”
