It’s no secret that whatever Rihanna touches turns to gold. Not only is she one of the best-selling artists of all time (she has sold over 230 million records), her Fenty Puma collaboration has been met with rave reviews from fans and fashion critics alike. So of course when the internet would go crazy when news hit that the fashion and beauty icon was going to launch a makeup line.
Fenty Beauty by Rihanna was born from the singer’s own love for makeup. “My lifelong obsession with makeup started with watching my mum put her makeup on. I always used to watch her make all these funny faces in the mirror, and I never understood that until I got older and fell in love with makeup myself and really started becoming obsessed, going to Sephora one too many times,” says the artist.
“The first time I remember having my makeup done was for this beauty pageant that I did in school. Ever since I saw foundation on my skin, it was like, I can never look at my skin without foundation again,” she says. “Now I’m making makeup that I dream teenagers could wear; women of all ages, all sizes, all skin tones, all religions, all cultures. This is exactly why I’m doing this.”
And the songbird has kept true to her promise of inclusion. For example, her Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Foundation comes in 40 shades, and the entire range will be available in every store all around the world so you’ll definitely be able to find something in your skin tone.
As a makeup lover herself, all the products in the collection are ones that she herself uses in her regime. The range is very complexion based because foundation is one of the first makeup products that she ever used. There are 91 products in all, 90 of which are complexion-based and one gloss. The Gloss Bomb Universal Lip Luminizer is a beige-pink nude shade that goes well with all skin tones. It also has an oversized applicator for easy application and a peach-vanilla scent.
We’ve tried the collection and one thing that really stood out were the products’ stellar textures. Lightweight and velvety, they left our skin looking radiant but with no oiliness. Another we loved: the awesome packaging. The boxes of the products were designed with graffiti for a more raw, urban feel, while the inside the products are housed in soft blush-nude colours that are uber feminine. This contrast was intentionally unexpected to represent Rihanna’s personality.
