If you have an oily scalp and dandruff, you may need a hair scrub, says Sam Chok, hairstylist at Passion Hair Salon. Before shampooing, section your hair the way you do when applying a scalp serum, then massage the scrub directly onto your scalp. Use it once a week to remove impurities, control oiliness and unclog hair follicles.
Word of caution, though: A hair scrub is not necessary for those with a normal scalp (a deep-cleansing shampoo will suffice) and should be completely avoided by those who suffer from scalp conditions like dryness, itchiness and redness, says Sam.
Here are three hair scrubs to try:
1. L’Oreal Paris Elseve Phytoclear 1 Min Pre-shampoo Purifying Scrub, $15.90
This has antibacterial tea tree essential oil and almond seeds to thoroughly purify and refresh the scalp.
2. The Body Shop Fuji Green Tea Refreshingly Purifying Cleansing Hair Scrub, $29
Silicone-free and contains a blend of Japanese green tea, mint menthol, salt crystals and honey to stimulate circulation in the scalp, while eliminating chemical residue from hair products.
3. L’Occitane Aromachologie Revitalizing Fresh Cleansing Scrub, $40
This hair scrub purifies with plant-based vinegar and sea salt, and lifts your senses with essential oils like mint, grapefruit and thyme.
