First of all, what exactly is ‘mermaid waves’? The closest style to it might be the classic beach waves, famous for its natural-looking and effortless vibe. Mermaid waves, however, is slightly more glossy and more glamourous – it won’t look out of place on the red carpet or for a night out. With an emphasis on texture, the mermaid waves hairstyle still retains a carefree aura, albeit with a more elegant twist.

So, how do we start achieving this look? There are some basics you need of course – think hairspray, mousse, curling iron etc – but the most important thing is practice, practice, practice. Ready? Then click next and check out the 4-step guide right now.

Sachajuan Hair Mousse, $33, Sephora

Firstly, apply mousse or strong hairspray mostly from the middle to the ends of your hair to give your hair some hold. Divide your hair into two sections – upper and lower – and pin the former up.

GHD Classic Curl Wand, US$350 (S$466), www.net-a-porter.com

Either using a curling wand, or a curling iron but with the clip open, wrap small sections of your hair around the barrel and curl outwards away from your face. Start near the handle and always curl downwards. Repeat this process all around the bottom section of your hair.

Once the bottom section of your hair is done, it’s time to move on to the upper section. Similar to step #2, curl your hair the same way, but remember not to curl too near the top of your head, as this will give you curls all the way to the roots.

Ouai Texturizing Hair Spray, $39, Sephora

You’re almost done – add a little volume to your crown by teasing the top section of your hair a bit. For that covetable textured look, use a texturising spray and comb through your hair gently from the roots to the tips with your fingers. Now, go forth and have fun!
