We love the convenience and portability of our foundation and BB cushion compacts, so it was only a matter of time before something more skincare-related emerged in a cushion form.

This fun new oil-blotting marvel from Murad is essentially a power-packed grease-killer. Part of its Pore Reform range, the MattEffect Blotting Perfector is a sheer pink liquid housed in a cushion compact. It’s been formulated with French green clay extract, marshmallow powder (!) and soft-focus mattifying spheres to absorb oil and minimise the appearance of imperfections.

We know that clays in general soak up oil and detoxify skin while providing a boost of nutrients, but what about the aforementioned marshmallow powder? This intriguing ingredient essentially leaves you with a soft matte finish, minus the dehydration you might expect. The powder is designed to only absorb sebum, not water, so your skin doesn’t dry out when you blot it.

The compact really does look like any other on the market, and also comes with an antimicrobial puff so you don’t have to worry about bacteria buildup. It’s designed to work in conjunction with the perfecting liquid to cool and refresh your skin, lowering the surface temperature instantly (which feels especially amazing after an intense workout sesh).

First things first, I will recommend going in with a light hand and not plunging your applicator into the cushion. Too much of the liquid is not only wasteful, but may mattify your skin to the point it starts feeling dry. Used sparingly, the blotting perfector will tone down any excess shine on your skin, leaving it feeling cool, smooth, and perfectly fresh, like you just redid your makeup.

You can definitely build up the matte effect if you’re especially oily in the T-zone, but always start with less and go in with a little more each time. The blotting liquid is so lightweight it’s instantly absorbed and leaves no trace behind, which I especially love when not wearing makeup.

The pore-blurring effect is meant to last for eight hours, though we can’t attest to that, having only used this towards the end of the day. It can also be used at the start of the day if you want to tone down any dewiness on the skin and keep your face looking matte and poreless for hours.

While it’s certainly not the most budget-friendly product around, we think it’s mighty impressive and well-worth the splurge if you’re plagued by oily skin. The Murad MattEffect Blotting Perfector ($68) will be available at Sephora, Robinsons the Heeren, and BHG Jurong from mid-April 2017.
