The Skincare Ingredients That Beauty Experts Are Loving

There are a ton of different ingredients used in beauty products, so it’s not always easy to know what to use. So we spoke to Dr XY Lum of IDS Clinic and Dr Ram of The Wellness Clinic to find out what are the ingredients they are loving now.

According to the doctors, ingredients like idebenone, hyaluronic acid, vitamin E and niacinamide are the ones to always have. “Idebenone is an antioxidant that protects cells from environmental damage, improves the appearance of fine lines, reduces dryness and smooths skin texture,” shares Dr Ram. He adds, “studies show that idebenone is more powerful in preventing cell damage than vitamin C”. When skin cells are damaged, it may cause pigmentation and other signs of ageing, which is a very common skin concern amongst many women. So now instead of using vitamin C, many are now looking into idebenone, a stronger and more effective skincare ingredient, to treat such problems.

Hydration is an important factor to good skin, and one of the best ingredients to deliver moisture to skin is hyaluronic acid. “Hyaluronic acid has powerful anti-ageing properties and is also one of the premier hydrating ingredients for all skin types,” says Dr Ram. It also regulates cell renewal and maintains skin’s moisture and elasticity while holding up to 1000 times its own weight in water, giving amazing benefits to dehydrated skin.

While its a known fact that pollution can damage our health, many are only now becoming increasingly aware of the effects it does to our skin such as dark spots and premature ageing. To fight pollution, look out for ingredients like “antioxidant-rich vitamin E, niacinamide and plant extracts, (which) help protect the skin from the environmental pollution,” shares Dr Lum.

Now that you know what ingredients to look out for, here are the products to try.

#1: The Body Shop Vitamin E Moisture-Protect Emulsion SPF30/PA+++, $36.90
Vitamin E This lightweight milky emulsion leaves your skin moisturised, soft and protected, without a white cast. It is infused with bio-fermented hyaluronic acid and vitamin E to lock in moisture ( it claims to hydrate skin for up to 48 hours) and fights free radical damage to protect skin from environmental aggressors. #2: Dr. Jart Cicapair Re-cover SPF 30PA++, $77, Sephora
Niacinamide A green-to-beige colour correcting treatment that transforms to a skintone cream once applied, it helps to correct redness, cover blemishes and protect skin from environmental damage. It also has tiger grass, an active ingredient used for centuries to restore and support damaged skin and inflammation. This cream also helps improve moisture levels to replenish fatigued skin with an infusion of sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium. #3: Kate Somerville Wrinkle Warrior Pink Plumping Mask (1), $88
Hyaluronic Acid This is made with three different sizes of hyaluronic acid (small, medium and large), to plump, hydrate and smooth the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. The largest sized molecule attracts water to ensure skin stays hydrated for a long period of time while the medium-sized molecule rejuvenates skin by improving viscoelastic properties and significantly decreases the appearance of deep wrinkles. Lastly, the smallest molecule is easily absorbed into the skin, allowing for excellent hydration in the deeper layers of the epidermis, resulting in a plumper complexion. #4: Clinique Moisture Surge 72-Hour Auto-Replenishing Hydrator, $75
Hyaluronic Acid Used as an overnight sleeping mask or moisturiser, it strengthens skin’s moisture barrier and improves the look of fine lines, flakiness and tightness from dehydration. Apart from its key ingredient hyaluronic acid, it also features an exclusive Auto-Replenishing Technology that instantly boosts skin’s hydration, while helping skin activate its own internal water source to deliver non-stop skin-plumping hydration. #5: Elizabeth Arden Prevage Anti-Aging Moisture Cream SPF30/PA++, $262
Idebenone Formulated with advanced Idebenone Technology, this gives powerful environmental protection against harmful pollutants and UV rays while also preventing any visible signs of ageing such as fine lines, wrinkles and discolouration. Furthermore, it improves skin’s elasticity and resilience to keep it looking and feeling firm. Main image: Like this?
