Rihanna and Kylie Jenner were the first celebrities to sport greyish locks. Then the hashtag #grannyhair spread like wildfire on Instagram back in March (it has over 48,000 posts now).

But the hair colour we’ve spotted most recently on our Instagram feeds elevates the look by adding a touch of silver to grey undertones. The result: A ‘do that’s younger and more modern (and we doubt it’ll invite questions about premature greying). British model Jourdan Dunn also threw in lilac and blue shades, while popular local Instagrammers like The Sam Willows’ lead singer Narelle Kheng and founder of The Tiramisu Cafe Peggy Chang recently debuted their new hairstyles – grey-silver streaks on black and a greenish-silver crop respectively – on their accounts.

Managing director of Salon Runway Junie Tan says this colour suits Asian skin tones as it “counteracts our yellowish undertones and make us look fairer”. In comparison, she points out that conventional choices like red or other warm brown tones may not suit all Asians because it may make one appear to have a darker complexion.

What haircare products would work best for bleached hair, according to Tan: Purple shampoo (which has purple pigments to balance out the yellow tones in bleached hair) and a scalp masque to treat scalps that are irritated or inflamed, especially after the bleaching process.
