RMK SPECIAL

The no-makeup makeup trend is making a big comeback both on the runways and the streets. The difference this time: gorgeous glowing skin. While previous renditions tended to focus on a more natural complexion, the look is now all about dewy luminosity. But achieving it is not just about using less makeup, according to celebrity makeup artist Clarence Lee.

“It’s actually harder to create a natural look that appears as if you barely have any product on,” says Lee. “So your base makeup is even more important, because you need to look like you have good skin without using too much colour makeup.”

The first step: choosing a makeup base that will even out skin texture (so makeup goes on more smoothly) and help your foundation last longer (so you don’t have to worry about it running or oxidising).

RMK Long Lasting UV SPF45/PA++++ ($57) not only does these, but also leaves a refreshing cooling sensation. Plus, it has a cocktail of nourishing ingredients such as citrus aurantium peel and bilberry extract to hydrate, refine and strengthen skin.

Follow up with colour correctors that can help perfect your complexion by hiding flaws such as dullness or redness, as well as highlighting the contours of your face. You can use one shade, or even a mixture on different areas of your face as required. RMK’s Basic Control Color ($30) is available in several shades: a pinkish #01 Silver to create a dewy finish, #02 Purple to brighten and cover blemishes, and #03 Green to reduce redness.

FOR DAY

To create a fresh, natural face, Lee used the neutral-toned RMK Ingenious Natural Eyes N eyeshadow palette in #01 to create depth. Cheeks were given a soft flush with the peachy RMK Ingenious Powder Cheeks N in #08, while lips looked almost nude with the RMK Irresistible Glow Lips in EX-07.

FOR NIGHT

Khor used soft pinks to achieve a sweet, dewy no-makeup makeup look. Eyes were given a pearly finish with the RMK Ingenious Powder Eyes N in #07 Beige, #08 Pink Beige and #16 Metallic Pink, while cheeks were dusted with the pastel pink RMK Ingenious Powder Cheeks N in #04. To achieve a natural rosy pout, a mix of RMK Irresistible Glow Lips in #09 and #11 was used.

Lee suggests applying #01 Silver directly on areas you want to highlight, like the top of your cheekbones, nose bridge and chin, or mixing it into your liquid foundation for an overall glow. To brighten your T-zone or under-eye area, use #02 Purple, and to neutralise patchiness or acne scars, #03 Green is recommended.

As a finishing touch, use a foundation that’s lightweight yet gives full coverage. It’s important to choose a foundation that is not too heavy, as you want to create the illusion of bare skin, and be able to even out the tone of your complexion effortlessly. RMK UV Liquid Foundation SPF50/PA+++ ($70) is a favourite of celebrity makeup artist Peter Khor’s, who says he loves it for its watery texture and long-lasting, full coverage.

Great for our humid climate, this weightless foundation is resistant to sweat, water and sebum, so there are no worries of it budging throughout the day. Available in seven shades, it has shea butter to keep your skin moisturised, and rosemary extract to tighten pores, so that you can achieve a flawless finish.
