The New Way To Wear Eyeliner: Grown-Up Grunge

Aka Kim Gordon’s signature beauty look since the ’90s (and remains so): black eyeliner rimmed heavily all around the peepers. Unlike some other grunge icons of the time, the Sonic Youth frontwoman has always pulled it off without looking like a mess; the effect severe yet slick. On a clean face, it’s a cool, easy-to-do statement (just use a smudge-proof kohl or pencil liner on the lash and waterline) – cue Coach and Chloe, which recreated it for their gothic-tinged F/W ’18 shows. It’s also – as proven by the 65-year-old Gordon, whose experimental guitar duo Body/Head drops its second album this month – ageless and timeless.

Perfect the look with (from top): Make Up Forever Aqua XL Eye Pencil, $36, and Marc Jacobs Beauty Fineliner Ultra Skinny Gel Eye Crayon, $32, Sephora. Shu Uemura Lasting Soft Gel Pencil, $37
