Cherry Discotheque first opened its doors back in September 2016 and unlike many other night establishments, the hip-hop club was situated at one of the most intimate and underground (quite literally) spaces by Singapore’s standards: beneath York Hotel.
It drew a too-cool-for-school crowd with an interior kitted out in a kitschy, retro vibe — think disco balls, neon-lit decor and an arcade game console — that was a refreshing addition to the nightlife scene on our shores then. That, and the quality hip-hop music they played drew a discerning audience. During its one year in operation, Cherry was ahead of the curve; bringing in Chinese hip-hop trio Higher Brothers as well as Korean-American record producer Choice 37 (known for working with G-Dragon), notably before the former’s crowd pleaser single Made In China was on the Spotify playlist of any and every cool kid here. Then, it shut its doors and naturally, fell off the radar.

Until social media posts in the last month or so tipped its return — after a year-long absence. Now having officially reopened its doors with an entirely new space (don’t worry, it’s still literally underground) in the heart of the CBD at 133 Cecil Street, Cherry has taken over the space that was once Mao (and before that, Kyo) — all while keeping true to its signature gritty aesthetics and cool kid rep. Note: streetwear is optional, but seems to be the popular choice. And music-wise, they’re still all about bringing the old and new school hip-hop tracks together for a raucous night, with DJ Fvder helming the decks.
