For the past few decades, gin was dismissed as a stuffy drink for those who frequent tennis and golf clubs – probably dressed in tweed and living in countryside England. In the 18th century, it was even dubbed “mother’s ruin”, and Victorian artist William Hogarth’s painting “Gin Lane” (picture a town of drunks and a mother dropping her baby in the foreground) perfectly encapsulated society’s impressions of its “evil” nature.

Now, it’s decidedly the drink of the moment in the fashion and creative scenes alike, and shows no signs of slowing down. The revival has seen a whole lot of new distilleries making small batch, craft gin – in line with the more general backlash against mass-produced alcohol. Rather than settling for house Gordon or the usual duty-free purchases, you’ll find some of Asia’s coolest bars stocking insider favourites like Sipsmith, Monkey47 and Death’s Door, while others are infusing the liquor with more experimental flavours like ginger or tree bark.

Back for the fourth time, the East Imperial Gin Jubilee will be taking place in Singapore from November 20-26, the last stop in a tour of five Asian cities including Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong, Phnom Penh, and Bangkok.
