The most dramatic room in the Mackintosh Building is the library.

24 Hours in Glasgow

“Tour Mackintosh Building at the Glasgow School of Art for its Art Nouveau design and exhibition gallery. Then head to Ashton Lane in the West End for vintage stores, restaurants, an old record shop and pubs – my pick is Ubiquitous Chip. Don’t miss the Gallery of Modern Art for its selection of top local artists like painter Ken Currie. Visit The Barras, Scotland’s oldest market, for more vintage finds, as well as fried Mars bars from the fish ’n’ chips shop nearby. To discover new bands, head to the 13th Note bar on King Street. Lastly, have traditional Scottish food at Cafe Gandolfi in Merchant City. I go every time I’m back for haggis, parsnips and potatoes.”

Alvar Aalto’s Paimio chair is a vintage find.

A Recent Find

“I came across one of Alvar Aalto’s famous chairs at Past Caring, a second-hand furniture store near Angel tube station in London. I paid about £2,000 (S$4,090) for it, which wasn’t exactly a snap, but it’s worth significantly more.”

“British electronic act Disclosure: two brothers in their early 20s making massive house music – slick and infectious.”

Chill-out Haunt

“Bistrotheque in London’s East End. At weekends, it’s the place to go for breakfast and newspapers while listening to somebody play Britney Spears on the restaurant piano. It’s pretty fun.”

 Go-to Shop

“Donlon Books at Broadway Market in London. It’s run by a friend who goes to places like New York and Berlin to search for independent books on art, fashion and countercultures. I go there every Saturday and leave with a new book.”

Pawson’s minimalist aesthetic for B&B Italia’s London showroom.

Favourite Name in Architecture

“I like John Pawson (whose works include remodelling the St. Moritz church in Augsburg, Germany), even though his minimalist aesthetic is not completely me. I’m very interested in the modern way he uses luxurious materials like marble and concrete to create simple yet beautiful spaces.”

Favourite Artists

“I love everything about British Pop artist Allen Jones, from his use of strong colours to his sculptures and paintings that discuss sexuality. His work is always twisted, yet not intimidating. I also admire the late American painter Robert Rauschenberg because he went against the norm – at a time when Abstract Expressionism was big – and made people see art in unexpected objects. Many hated his work then, but now, it seems so relevant.”
