The quirky interiors of the hotel’s 634 rooms have largely been left the same. Some rooms are catered just for the female traveller, and come equipped with tools like facial steamers and hair straighteners.

The Phillipe Starck-designed hotel opened its doors at Beach Road last year. Now, after a period of rebranding, the hotel has re-emerged as JW Marriott Hotel Singapore South Beach. Art still features heavily in the hotel, with more than 30 works and installations by regional and international artists. The entrance features video wall installation by Korean artist Lee Lee Nam, while a reclaimed scrap metal sculpture dubbed “Gorilla” by Turner Prize winner, British artist Iain Nutting, sits in pride of place at the front entrance.

The Court Martial Bar’s specialty: A wide variety of wines and sharing plates.

What else is new: The extensive dining options available in the hotel. Of the nine food and beverage establishments, five are currently in operation while the remaining four are slated to open by the second quarter of 2017. Sip cocktails in the refined, upscale Court Martial Bar and New York-esque gastropub Media Bar, and indulge in gin-based concoctions at Tonic.

Stop by at Tonic, located in the hotel lobby, for pre-dinner drinks.

For sustenance, there’s Beach Road Kitchen, which offers all-day dining and live cooking demonstrations in a chic, airy space. There’s also celebrity chef restaurant Akira Back, which will serve modern Japanese cuisine inflected with Korean accents.

One dish to try at Beach Road Kitchen: the Kurobuta Pork Chop.

Other perks for guests include luxuriating in two outdoor infinity pools, exploring the sky gardens and sweating it out at the hotel’s 24-hour fitness centre. The lobby also houses the Activity Table, an area which offers interesting programmes like wine and cheese tastings, coffee experiences and chef-led culinary events.

Where we’d rather be: Lounging poolside at the South Beach’s infinity pool.

The hotel is now taking reservations
, and there’s an opening offer running from now till March 2017 – rooms are priced at $335 onwards (subject to availability). If you’re not headed out of Singapore for the year-end, this sounds like a great place to usher in the new year.
