The Naked Director

netflix august 2019 new shows

What it’s about: Here’s another comedy series set in the ’80s but on a markedly different topic – Japan’s porn industry. The Naked Director is based on the true story of filmmaker Toru Muranishi, who sought to revolutionise the industry.

Why watch it: I mean, if you’ve ever, ahem, enjoyed the fruits of that particular industry, wouldn’t you be interested in knowing what goes behind the scenes?

When it’s available: August 8

American Factory

What it’s about: Chinese billionaire opens factory in Ohio, industrial heartland of America, creating jobs for 2,000 workers. This of course, flies in the face of Trump’s flippant lies about nationalism and job-stealing. But while it sounds ideal, problems soon surface when Chinese managerial styles clash with American work culture.

Why watch it: American Factory is the first project from Higher Ground Productions, the new studio by the Obamas, which will produce works to be streamed on Netflix. Looks like the Obamas are off to a good start – American Factory picked up the Directing Award for U.S. Documentary at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and is already generating Oscars buzz.

When it’s available: August 21

Glow: Season 3

What it’s about: If you’ve never watched the show, it’s a comedy series set in the ’80s about a group of amateur female wrestlers called Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling aka Glow.

Why watch it: Despite being a comedy series, Glow has often addressed contentious topics such as abortion and addiction. The latest season will touch on issues that need more attention such as  depression and other mental health issues.

When it’s available: August 9
