American Vintage is Your New Go-To For Wardrobe Staples

Isabel Ong speaks to founder Michael Azoulay on why the brand is setting up its first store in Singapore now, and how its luxury basics differ from others.

Attention to detail
Frenchman Michael Azoulay says the brand was founded ten years ago to offer quality basics that were simple, timeless and versatile. There is also great attention to detail: “The washes used with our cotton t-shirts make you feel like you are putting on a second skin.”  Luxurious basics
The brand’s focus on offering luxury basics for both men and women, including tops, pants, skirts, jackets and coats, is influenced by American and French traditions. Says Azoulay, “We mix American innovation with French elegance and refinement. We’ve used Supima cotton (grown only in the USA), which is (extremely) soft and comfortable, in every collection since the brand debuted.”   Global expansion
On opening its first 1,000 square-feet flagship store in Singapore, Azoulay says this reflects American Vintage’s ambition to expand on an international level. “We started with one product, and now we have a collection that offers complete outfits. Our products are getting stronger and more stylish. Today, there are over 90 boutiques and 500 stockists in the world.”  Latest collection
What to expect in its Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter ’15 collections, which also mark the brand’s 10th anniversary: Sportswear-inspired pieces that still retain a feminine appeal, and oversized cuts on t-shirts, shirts and bermudas. #03-13B Level 3 Takashimaya D.S.
