Op-Ed: Fashion Writer Keng Yang Shuen Picks Out Angelina Jolie's Most Memorable Outfits

By now, you would’ve heard all about Angelina Jolie’s impending divorce with Brad Pitt (trust us, we’re still trying to recover). My way of dealing with it? Taking a look back at the American actress/filmmaker’s style evolution over the years. She’s known to favour black, but I think most of her best red carpet moments came when she opted for colour.

#1: BAFTA Awards, 2003
The lovely moss green of Jolie’s Collette Dinnigan gown is an unusual pick – most people would shy away from this shade of green but it warmly complements the tan she sported back then. #2: Mr and Mrs Smith premiere, 2005
Okay, I have to relent: Angelina’s wearing black here but we have no bones to pick when she’s looking this kick-ass – in leather Versace, no less. Bonus? It perfectly matched the theme of the film she was promoting – yes, the one that brought her and Brad Pitt together in the first place. #3: Golden Globes awards, 2011
Other than black, Jolie typically turns to the house of Versace for the red carpet: here, she’s in Atelier Versace, the haute couture arm of the Italian label. For me, this is one of her most memorable looks – I adore the instensity of the emerald green colour, though I do wish the shoulder pads weren’t so prominent. #4: Tree of Life premiere at Cannes Film Festival, 2011
Donning a dramatic chocolate brown Atelier Versace gown for the premiere of then-husband Pitt’s film Tree of Life, Jolie was the picture of the classic glamorous movie star. Of course, where else to go all-out than at Cannes? The high thigh slit she’s sporting here might just be a precursor to her infamous leg-baring at the 2012 Oscars… #5: Oscars, 2012
Yup, here it is, the infamous leg-baring at that year’s Oscars – how could we leave it out? It seemed really out of character for the (usually) reserved actress, who was clad in a slinky black velvet piece by Atelier Versace. #6: Golden Globes awards, 2012
Another one for her hall of fame, Jolie chose Atelier Versace again – this time in a silvery white number with a crimson accent. Women are still obsessed over the make-up she sported – how do we recreate that insanely perfect red pout that matched her dress so well? #7: World War Z premiere, 2013
Jolie finally took a break from Versace and opted for British couture label Ralph & Russo for a strapless white peplum number that fit her like a glove. Looking poised and completely ladylike, this was the ideal piece to accompany Pitt for the premiere of his film without overshadowing him. #8: BAFTA awards, 2014
Showing us that she’s no one-trick pony, Jolie stepped out in Saint Laurent, reverting back to her favourite monochromatic palette. I have no quibbles; she pulls off this mannish look with such flair, I can see similar-minded girls the world over bookmarking this look on Pinterest instantly. As the French would say, Jolie’s got that certain je ne sais quoi in spades.   Images: @ale_peters, @styleiconangelinajolie, @miriam_aguirre Like this?
