Think Ballet Flats Are Basic? You've Not Seen These Fashion-Forward Versions

The dance-inspired footwear takes an elevated spin this season.

Google ballet flats and women who wear them” and you will usually end up with stories about how these sensible shoes are made for the office and how stars like Karlie Kloss, Sienna Miller, and Liv Tyler have made these flats part of their dressed-down attires. Chic, but basic. While the humble ballet flats have found solid footing as the de de facto footwear for office commuters and weekend dressers, a bunch of designers are making a strong case for fashion-forward versions this Spring/Summer 2020.

Simone Rocha takes a punk route with versions featuring embellishments like spikes, faux pearls, crystals and thick chains. The latter appear on the pointy flats at Gucci too, which were worn with evening gowns, ’70s-inflicted suits, and flirtatious skirts with high slits. Over at Miu Miu, ballet flats get a whimsical treatment when adorned with fluffy metallic bows. Still not convinced that flats can go beyond the demure territory? Swipe above for some of our top picks for elevated ballet flats.
