The Bra Trend: The Runway Versus Street Style Face-Off

bra and ss17

Flashing your bra with your top used to be the equivalent of showing your VPL on your pants. Faux pas? Not anymore. As though taking a leaf from the Kendall Jenner stylebook, the Spring Summer ’17 shows prove that the bra and its many permutations is going to be the top to be seen in. Among the hot styles to step out in are the bikini top, the bandeau, the sports bra, the ’50s-era full cup bra, and if you’re going by the Versus show, an oversized leather belt too.

All this talk about flashing the brasserie harks back to the ’90s at a time when Fiona Apple, Gwen Stefanie, Spice Girls et al wore them with buckets of insouciance. But just how easy is it to cop the runway inspiration in real life?

Judging from the street style looks, it might be a cinch to pull off if you know how to draw the line between looking fashionable and vampy.

For something a little more risque, shake it up with a velvet skirt and mesh top. Don't forget the leather and studded accessories.
Giambattista Valli does coquettish with a bra over a blouse and skirt.
Cop the Kendall Jenner-meets-Scarface thing with a slip dress and bralette.
The new plunging neckline at Fendi comes courtesy of an unbuttoned jacket and a super sleek bra.
We love this ensemble of a low-cut blouson over a lacey bra top.
When in doubt, do the '90s look like 3.1 Phillip Lim with denim.
Trust us: It will never go out of style.
