Of late, vanity cases, a.k.a jewellery box-inspired bags, have become the new and more chic standard for novelty bags. Unlike the conventional ones which are big on the cute and kitsch factor, this group of bags are more sophisticated, can segue from day to night easily, and come with a major vintage cachet (which means they’re even more desirable).

Cartier’s latest bag collection Guirlande de Cartier is primed for this new direction in the designer bag world. Due for launch here in March 2019, the line of structured handy-sized totes takes its inspiration quite literally from the red jewellery boxes that the brand is famous for.

The Guirlande de Cartier collection comes in three sizes — mini, small and medium.

The result is a boxy calfskin design ($2,770-$4,250) that comes with eight corners to replicate the facets of the jewellery box. The golden garland detail — a motif that’s been on Cartier’s boxes since the 18th century — and the namesake of this collection is stamped onto the leather.

Available in three sizes of medium, small and mini, the bags come in three colour permutations of classic house red, a forest green, and a timeless black. Peek inside, and the bag comes with a nifty pocket mirror too. In short, this collection’s a gem.

The bag is great for daytime and chic for evenings too.
