Fashion Houses are Bringing Back Chunky "Dad Shoe" Sneakers

A homage to the ‘90s ‘dad shoes’ trend, chunky sneakers have returned – bigger and better than ever. Luxury brands including Gucci, Louis Vuitton and Balenciaga have jumped on the bandwagon with their sleek takes on the ‘ugly shoe’. Just like stars including Fann Wong and Hyuna, you too can dress your pair up or down. Click through the gallery to check out our picks and a few of your favourite celebrities who have rocked the trend.

#1: Balenciaga Triple S
Balenciaga’s rendition of the dad shoe combines two trends together – the pre-distressed and chunky sneakers trend. They got their name from the triple-stacked bulky sole that was inspired by the soles of running, basketball and track shoes. To top it all off, the pair of sneakers has its size embroidered on the toe and is laced up by round rope laces. Here, South Korean idol Hyuna styles it with a Balenciaga sweater, light-washed denim jeans cuffed at the bottom and a Balenciaga Triangle Duffle Bag for the ultimate airport fashion ensemble. The Gucci Rhyton, which was first released at Gucci’s Cruise 2018 collection, comes in two designs – one with an oversized print of Gucci’s multicoloured logo and the other with a pre-distressed effect just like the Balenciaga Triple S. Photo: Gucci/Instagram #3: Louis Vuitton SS18 sneaker
This offbeat version of the chunky sneaker can easily pass off as a shoe from the future. Featuring an oversized spring sole with a prominent arch and a oversized tongue, the SS18 sneaker was influenced by Creative director Nicolas Ghesquiere’s love for sci-fi. Style it with a pair of distressed denim jeans for a casual look like influencer Aimee Song. Photo: Aimee Song/Instagram #4: Nike Air Max 97 LX ‘Swarovski’
For a real life Kira Kira effect, you’ll need this pair of luxurious sneakers which sparkles in the light. It combines Swarovski’s Crystal Fabric into the Air Max 97 by using a heat fusing process. Our favourite would be the one in the silver colourway which has a subtle hint of red in the Swoosh logo. #5: Fila Disruptor II
The Fila Disruptor II is an affordable approach to rocking the dad shoe trend. Although the design is fairly simple with only branding on the side, tongue and midsole, the razor-like sole adds a rugged dimension to the clean cut pair of sneakers. Photo: Fila Korea/Instagram #6: Nike Air Max 95
The Nike Air Max 95 might look bulky but it is extremely lightweight and comfortable on the feet. All thanks to the brand’s signature Air-Sole Unit. It comes in a variety of colourways but we absolutely adore the one in Red Stardust & Washed Teal. Doesn’t the pastel details remind you of the Paddle Pop ice cream you use to eat when you were little? #7: Prada Cloudbust
Prada is the latest luxury fashion house to jump on this trend. Instead of the usual laces, the brand switch it up with a single velcro strap. Apart from the geometric shapes that can be seen on the shoe, the silhouette also features a bubble-style midsole which was designed to create the feeling of stepping on a cloud.
