Are Clothes Modern?

The name of writer/architect Bernard Rudofsky’s famous 1944 exhibition that explored the meaning of fashion, the question also lies at the heart of Dior Pre-Fall 2020. Reinventing house icons new and old by varying their cut, prints and fabric in almost unorthodox ways, creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri offers some insight during these introspective times: they certainly can be.

How far can and should the present-day creative director of a historical fashion house tinker with heritage? Maria Grazia Chiuri muses over this daunting question in Pre-Fall 2020 only to come up with a refreshingly effortless collection for Dior, which includes the brand’s signature Bar jacket and tailored shirt rendered in casual, summer-friendly fabrics.   Jacquard jacket, cotton shirt, canvas bucket hat, metal and acetate sunglasses, resin pearl and enamel necklace, and nylon bag strap. All Dior

Since coming on board as Dior’s creative director in 2016, Chiuri – intellectual, feminist and an inner bohemian – has introduced her own, often more youthful and relaxed signatures such as the anorak to the French maison. Like the brand’s classics, these get a similarly surprising makeover with un-ladylike prints like tie-dye and camouflage in Pre-Fall, blurring the lines between what’s from the past and what isn’t.   Jacquard anorak, cotton shirt, brass earrings with resin pearls, and brass necklace
