Street style rules dictate that the brighter or more unexpected an accessory, the better. But even if you’re not into fashion peacocking, there are many reasons to invest in, say, some colourful bags; lustrous monogram slides or a pretty-meets-playful piece of jewellery, especially right now.
For one, wearing neutral-on-neutral is huge in Spring Summer 2019 — and that one statement accessory in a fun hue would immediately lend personality and shift you the right side up the fashion spectrum. And in this age of democratic style, there’s just something liberating about having your first wardrobe buy of the year be in a fun, do-a-double-take kind of design, or an optimistic colour. The first rule of the new year should be to not follow any rules.
Here are our picks from Louis Vuitton, which has launched in stores a range of both classic and new signatures updated to check the “feel good” box — ‘cos shouldn’t that be what the new year is all about?
The bags
If you haven’t been introduced to the label’s new shoulder bag, the ’80s electro-influenced New Wave with its rainbow-toned “Vuitton” motif, you won’t miss the latest versions: they come in electric tones, covered with street-inspired patches; or been adapted into a new, too-cute heart shape. For something more polished (but still novel), the popular Twist chain shoulder bag is now available in metallic embroidered leather, while the artisanally made Capucines tote boasts metal studs laid out in a sun pattern, inspired by a sculpture in the brand’s Place Vendome flagship in Paris.
The shoes
It seems like the brand might have taken inspiration from the bedroom for its latest footwear – and we ain’t complaining. Expect closed-toe slippers in silky satin, as well as fur-adorned, kitten-heeled sandals that are the embodiment of boudoir chic. Also a must-try: the monogrammed loafers in ultra plush velvet and cashmere (yes, kinda like animal plush slippers — just extremely luxurious). They hail from the home shoes department, but who’s stopping you from wearing them out? For something more hardy, don’t miss the brand’s crystal-embellished take on its Front Row sneakers that are exclusive to South Asia.
The jewellery
Those looking for something more precious without dialling down on the playfulness would like the Star Blossom line of fine jewellery. Including a pendant, stud earrings and a bracelet, the dainty pink gold designs are each anchored by the brand’s signature four-petal flower motif — in full diamonds. Meanwhile the smart-looking, no-fuss Tambour watch gets updated with an interchangeable patent leather strap. Who says fun can’t be functional?
