The wonderfully weird universe that’s a Gentle Monster store needs little introduction by now. Frequent travellers to Seoul would be more than familiar with their sprawling Garosu-gil boutique, and the slightly more modest version — albeit, still replete with its art installations — on home ground at Ion Orchard. Now there’s a second location in Singapore, and if you’ve been keeping up with their pop-ups the world over (Dover Street Market New York, Selfridges London…), you’ll find its theme incredibly familiar.
A continuation of Gentle Monster’s narrative of the universe at large (think: extraterrestrials traversing planets), The Shoppes By Marina Bay Sands store, through but of course art installations, explores the consequences of ecological change on Earth, as well as fake news.
On occasion of its new digs, the Korean brand has teamed up with Singapore-based fashion personality Yoyo Cao on their ubiquitous teardrop-shaped sunglasses in a red (lenses) and gold (frame) colourway, marked with Cao’s Instagram handle, ‘Yoyokulala’ on the inside of the sunglasses’ arm.
