Street style versus street style. Which side of the fence do you sit on these days? The former has gone from becoming the precursor of runway shows to today’s OOTD culture. The latter, meanwhile, is being celebrated left, right and center by celebrities, fashion tastemakers, and, yes, the street style pack.
The man who started the rage: Demna Gvasalia, the creative director of fashion label Vetements, who’s also the new man at Balenciaga (see our editor’s picks of the Autumn/Winter ’16 collection). Gvasalia’s witty and raw take on everyday clothing that are actually worn by everyday people has created a new take on chic womenswear that’s part Salvation Army, part deconstructionist. Oversized shirts, cropped sweaters, prairie dresses slashed at the hem and combined into patchwork pieces are all signatures of this Louis Vuitton and Margiela alumnus.
But it is Gvasalia’s hoodie which could just be his breakthrough piece. Worn large and plastered with the Champion brand logo or the Titanic movie poster, this irreverent take on womenswear is a stroke of genius. And everyone – including Rihanna and Kanye West – are lapping the hooded sweatshirts up. Already, the piece – which retails for around US$700 (S$953) – has sold out on e-tail sites like Mytheresa and Ssense.
The irony of it all? You could still cop the look using your own hoodie. For inspiration on how to style them, just turn to the women in our gallery below.
