It’s no secret that Monsieur Christian Dior is an uber superstitious man who often seeks out clairvoyants and always had his tarot cards reading prior to his shows. Obviously, its current artistic director Maria Grazia Chiuri is charmed by all that history and has been imbuing her designs with symbolisms like astrological signs, tarot card images and horoscopes from Day One at the house.
For Resort ’18, however, Chiuri puts her own spin on this superstitious business by turning to a tarot card deck designed by two American women from California in 1981. Called Motherpeace Tarot, the cards were the brainchild of a shamanic healer and scholar Vicki Noble as well as artist and scholar Karen Vogel who are self-proclaimed feminists.
What makes the motifs in Motherpeace — and Dior’s Resort ’18 designs — different from the other tarot designs that Chiuri has used before is their strong feminine presence. That’s because the cards are based on goddesses from different cultures around the world and also designed in a circle shape — a nod to its ancient symbol of the goddess, fertility and the womb. That inspiration gave birth to a tableau of patterns like the Five of Swords and the Death card that appeared on the clothes and accessories during Dior’s Resort ’18 show in California.
To mark the collection, Dior is hosting a series of pop-up events at its boutiques in Paris, Milan, Berlin and Miami to showcase the suite of merchandise sporting Motherpeace’s iconography. While the event is not landing in Singapore, the merchandise will nonetheless be stocked at Dior boutiques here. Consider yourself lucky.
