When it comes to Singapore’s punishing heat, layering might seem like a distant dream, only possible when we’re vacationing at cooler spots. But we dare say, it isn’t too difficult a thing to accomplish here — if you choose your separates right. Above, the ways you can nail layers while still keeping cool.
With the right fabrics, layering can be a walk in the park in Singapore. Think of breathable materials like cotton, linen and rayon, and better yet, in breezy silhouettes. Over here, we’ve chosen to layer a rayon shirt over a striped cotton tee and a pair of cotton chinos. The shirt will keep you warm in the cold office, and you can always remove it and drape it over your shoulder during lunch. Complete the casual look with a pair of sneakers that will keep your soles comfortable.

A structured blazer is always perfect when you want to sharpen up your look. However, avoid those that in fabrics meant for crisp climates: wool, corduroy and flannel are no nos. Again, pick one in linen or cotton. Here, we’ve paired our blazer with a ruffled dress for contrast.

An easy way to layer in humid weather is to focus on textures. One trick that we often abuse: tying our outerwear around the waist to create a cinching effect. We’ve chosen a biker jacket that you can wrap around a maxi dress — a sleeveless one so that you can layer a cotton short sleeve shirt underneath for maximum effect.

Go all out and have fun with your accessories, but don’t go overboard. The general rule of thumb is to limit the layering to one type of accessory. If you’re putting on a few necklaces, keep the rest of your adornments simple. A thin belt and a pair of mismatched hoops will do the trick. Keep your fingers and wrists bare to balance it all out.
