In our May 2016 issue, we touched on how keeping fit was not just a lifestyle choice, but a fashionable one, thanks in part to the rise of models like Karlie Kloss, Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner and their inspiring #fitspo posts. Now, there’s another rising star in the scene to watch: South Korean longboarder Ko Hyo Joo, whose passion for the sport has earned her over 266 thousand followers.
I first came across a video showcasing her slick moves (above) on my Facebook feed, and was immediately mesmerised by the deft yet graceful way she manoeuvred, hopped and skipped – all while on top of a moving board. Dubbed “longboard dancing”, Ko’s fancy footwork and other skating tricks are the main draw of every Instagram and YouTube video she puts up.
Couple that with her smooth, flowing locks and cute skating gear – knee-high socks, Nike sneakers and caps are on regular rotation – and it’s hardly any wonder that Ko’s steadily gaining popularity in the digital sphere.
Further proof that she’s one to watch: A recent Vogue profile feature describing how she got into longboarding (to relieve the boredom of a 9-to-5 job) and how she’s now received invitations to skate in cities like Berlin and Paris.
