You’ve heard the news by now: Celine in the last year has had a passing of torch in the creative department. At helm was Phoebe Philo, responsible for those slip-on skate-inspired sneakers everyone went nuts over in 2013 despite brands like Vans having purveyed essentially the same silhouette for decades. The Classic box bag, the Trio, the Trapeze… These greatest hits from the French brand, again, Philo magic. But as with all good things, such a stellar 10-year tenure had to end, with Hedi Slimane — previously at Saint Laurent — anointed successor.
Well known for overhauling a brand’s look and feel upon arrival, Slimane declared the introduction of menswear and couture collections at the once womenswear only house — his first order of the day. The second? This bag: the very inaugural glimpse into his direction for Celine, and unveiled to the world by way of Lady Gaga.
Aesthetically, it’s as if Philo’s Celine and Slimane’s Saint Laurent had a love child. That hangtag you see dangling from handle was also a marker of the latter’s It bag at Saint Laurent, the Sac De Jour. The ergonomic and classic shape? Quite the Philo sensibility. But this — debuting the brand’s new era on the arms of Lady Gaga — is more than just teasing the next bag fans can soon expect to snag.
It’s a manoeuvre true to his MO; building a brand’s image upon the cool currency a very select group of musicians possess. So as Saint Laurent had Gaga (also Courtney Love and Sky Ferreira) then hawking its too-cool-for-school attitude, so does Celine now. And what this means for us is that the once low profile but much revered fashion brand is probably going to drum up a lot more noise moving forward. The genre? Likely to be rock ‘n’ roll, baby. So stay tuned, listen up, and get excited.
