Michelle Obama Might Just Break The Internet In This Balenciaga Outfit, And We Love It

Let’s face it, Michelle Obama has always been known for her fun and varied sense of fashion — quite unlike that of her successor, Melania Trump, who comes across more as the typically frigid Upper East side socialite.

She’s had many, many, many memorable outfits; the rose gold chain-mail Versace at the Italy state dinner, the fiery red McQueen for the Chinese state dinner and the lovely chartreuse Isabel Toledo lace coat at the 2009 inauguration ceremony, to name but a few.

Obama’s latest appearance however, sees her in perhaps her most unequivocally fashion outfit yet, clad in a yet-to-hit-the-stores silk shirt dress from Balenciaga’s S/S’19 collection, paired with unmissable sequinned thigh-high boots from the brand’s S/S’18 collection.

You might say it’s a bit much, especially when the occasion — the final stop of Obama’s sold-out promo tour for her new memoir, Becoming — usually calls for something more daytime-friendly. Some might even say it’s not the most flattering ensemble, but as veteran fashion critic Robin Givhan points out, “taste is subjective, and what might be one person’s glamazon coup is another’s ostentatious faux pas.”

It’s an eye-catching outfit that’s practically tailor-made for Instagram but screw that; Obama has been scrutinised to death during her eight years as First Lady in the White House. Now that she’s rid of all the rigmarole and protocol that comes with the position (as much as possible), why shouldn’t she indulge in what she likes? In a time where we’re dealing with daily crap from Trump and more, we’ll take Michelle Obama and her glittery Balenciaga boots. Heck, we’ll take Michelle Obama anytime.
