To sneakerheads, the Nike Daybreak is an icon. Joan Benoit Samuelson won the first women’s marathon at the 1984 Olympics while wearing them. Did we mention, that they’re also the first pair of Nikes to incorporate a straight last, creating that signature elongated silhouette? Then there’s the Nike Waffle Racer – a classic from 1976 that’s famously named after the motif on the outsoles which looks like, well, waffles.

These sneakers combine the silhouette of two retro styles: the Daybreak and the Waffle Racer.

Mash those two styles together and you could end up with the winning Nike x Sacai LDWaffle hybrid style that Nikelab and the Japanese brand is releasing at Dover Street Market Singapore (DSMS) on May 16. Why does it matter? Because to hype kids and sneakerheads, the vintage cachet of the design ups the collectable merch cachet. To fashion types, on the other hand, the chunky silhouette checks that appetite for footwear design that’s unconventional but not too outre.

The unisex two-piece collection ($239) first made their debut at Sacai’s Spring/Summer 2019 men’s show. The mesh and leather kicks grounded the collection’s sporty vibe and were worn by both the male and female models who walked the show. While the long silhouette of the shoe upper and the waffle outsole are a nod to the retro style of the Daybreak and Racer respectively, there are other design updates that add to the colourful personality to the shoes.

Cue the double leather Swooshes, the suede mudguard, the double-layered tongue and the foam protrusion at the heel which gives it a futuristic touch. The bright colour blocking in those vivid Lichtenstein-esque hues add to the look-at-me factor. The shoes are available for in-store purchase for those who have signed via the raffle system with DSMS. But for the rest of us who missed that boat, do check out DSMS E-Flash site on May 16 to get your hands on a pair.
