If you’re catching the Minimalism: Space. Light. Object exhibition at the National Gallery Singapore, be sure to make a pit stop at the museum’s retail space Gallery & Co for another sort of design treat. Italian indie eyewear label Super by Retrosuperfuture has set a futuristic pop-up there (till Jan 19) that’s doused in neon lighting and outfitted in ceiling-to-floor mirrors.
Shop from a selection of 50 pairs of the brand’s hipster retrofied styles like tinted aviators and disco-worthy square frames. The pop-up also carries an exclusive series called The Iconic (above, $320 a pair) which is a collaboration with the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. The five pairs in the series riffs on the trademark oval frames that the artist donned and are available in five colours.
At a time when wearing chunky and odd-looking sneakers won’t make anyone raise an eyebrow, the sneakers from Both manage to make us stop and take notice thanks to the brand’s fresh take on this streetwear perennial. The year-old cult French sneaker label makes its debut at Dover Street Market Singapore on Dec 1 and should be your go-to name if you’re into utilitarian sneakers remixed with cool industrial touches.
Made from durable vulcanised natural rubber, the shoes ($380-$650) boast details like uppers accented with nylon, eyelets in the shape of bolts, and logo tags that carry the chemical formula of the latex the shoes are made from. One of our favourite styles? A high-top Mary Janes hybrid that comes with exaggerated lug soles and nylon belt buckles.
Launching next month, Moynat’s latest collaboration sees its artistic director Ramesh Nair turning to monsters. In particular, the works of Franco-Japanese artist Tiffany Bouelle which he stumbled upon at an exhibition in Paris. Bouelle is known for her playful illustrations of adorable yet fearsome creatures and created a series of original illustrations for the leather goods house. Dubbed Bad Dreams, these drawings are inspired by the artist’s own little brothers and the games they played.
These illustrations are handscreened onto the roomy Oh! Tote which is crafted inside out in coated linen-cotton canvas and then finished with leather binding on its edges. To evoke eyes, the handles of the bag come with circular chape ends. When seen from the front – along with an illustration of teeth by Bouelle – the tote appears to form a monster’s face. Also available in the collection are pouches and silk twill scarves.
How does a watch which has been around since 1998 celebrates its coming of age? For Chaumet‘s Class One diving watch, turning 20 this year doesn’t mean it needs to try too hard to reinvent its look. The 2018 updates feature three new pieces in new colour combinations that would fit right into any wardrobe – whether you prefer athleisure, minimalist or feminine styles. There’s one in black, in white, and another in pink – all teamed on a sporty rubber strap and bearing the collection’s signature graphic modernist lines.
Those who loved the recent (but now gone) Marni Market pop up store at Ion Orchard can now continue shopping for the brand’s lifestyle and homeware products at a more leisurely pace. The Italian brand has set up a digital space on www.marni.com offering limited edition designs and lifestyle products just in time for those looking for creative gift ideas.
Crafted by a community of Colombian artisans who have long collaborated with the brand, the items include handwoven PVC lounge chairs and baskets as well as the woven new designs for its popular woven shoppers and retro-cool crochet wool bags.
