Springtime, sartorially speaking, goes hand in hand with floral prints, feminine floaty frills and pastel hues. From baby pinks to lemon yellows, light girly soft colours make us feel as bright and fresh as new bloomed blossom. It was thus no wonder that the S/S ‘18 catwalks were peppered with pastel pieces, with models walking the runway in a combination of pastel hues at Victoria Beckham, Celine and Preen.

As with most wearable fashions, as soon as it appears on the runway – celebrities and then mere mortals also follow suit. Take Ming Xi as an example – she’s opted for a light pastel pink dress from Loewe, but reworked it with some striking black boots, to avoid being too ‘cutesy’ in her pink.

If you’re used to veering towards darker and muted shades on the colour spectrum, pastels can be rather intimidating. Yes, it isn’t just bold bright colours that can overwhelm us – trying to play with this soft palette is also difficult.  Head to toe lavender? Or violet and mint? Darn scary if you ask us.

So to ease yourself into the pastels, we recommend sticking to one or two colours to begin with, and then toning them down with black or soft grey pieces. Soft grey is a fantastic addition as it falls into the similar ‘feminine’ colour shades as the pastels, but is dense enough to avoid looking like a bouquet of flowers. Lest we forget beauty, here’s a handy guide on how to wear pastel beauty products for Asian skin tones.

To understand what colours to pair, you can consult the colour wheel for guidance. Colours opposite each other compliment each other. As a quick rough guide, it will be baby blue and light coral, light purple and pink with lemon yellow and mint greens with soft light rose colours.
