Following the success of its debut last year, Uniqlo has just launched its second installation of its 2017 Batik Motif collection which features a combination of traditional batik prints in contemporary colours, designs and silhouettes.
The latest collection comprises of shirts and blouses for both genders and draws its influences from Indonesian culture such as the parang (knife) and sulur daun (vine leaves). Instead of its traditional appeal, the Japanese fashion brand has managed to modernise the concept by updating its colour palette (read: colours that reflect the summer season such as soft pink and blue which are rare in traditional batik) to cater to the fashion crowd, while still retaining the traditional flowing strokes in design. The collection also includes a variety of simpler, decorative geometric patterns for a more modern take on batik.
The latest release comes in light and comfortable materials, making it suitable for countries with tropical climates such as Singapore. Through this collection, Uniqlo aims to increase the awareness of Indonesia’s traditional cultural treasure among younger generations around the world.
Below, our top picks from the collection.
