The Legit Way To Pull Off Marimekko Florals (They're Totally Trending)

We are labeling the S/S ’18 take on the Spring perennial trend of flower prints as “establishment florals”. These are the kind of designs that would call to mind signature fabric patterns created by major textile companies.

On one end of the spectrum, there are the haberdashery-style patterns commonly found at the Liberty London store. They’re quaint and full of country charm. Then there are the Marimekko-looking flowers, a nod to the bold and graphic ones the Finnish textile company is famous for (who doesn’t know the poppy pattern?). These also happen to be the sort of florals that are sprouting up at labels like Kenzo, Marni and Mary Katrantzou.

But if you’re hopping to cop authentic Marimekko florals, here is the good news. The company just announced that it will be launching a while-stocks-last tie-up with Japanese fast-fashion giant Uniqlo come March 30. The nine-item casual womenswear collection will comprise ready-to-wear pieces, bag, and plimsolls.

Each of these easy and street wear-appropriate pieces sports the prints created by Maija Louekari, one of Marimekko’s star illustrators and print designers. She’s the woman behind the brand’s popular batik-style floral design called the Siirtolapuutarha (city garden) and the polka-dotted motif called Rasymatto, and these patterns would be available for the Uniqlo tie-up too. Here, we showcase some of our top picks from the outing.
