Fans of David Bowie will be psyched to hear about the Vans x David Bowie collection that has just hit retail stores and e-tailers. Harnessing inspiration from the most impactful and influential works of Bowie — and fitted in Vans’ iconic silhouettes and cool ‘tude — the collection spans footwear, to accessories and apparel.
For hardcore fans, you’ll be able to recognise the similarities the colourways of the sneakers have to certain album covers, and glimpses of Bowie’s unforgettable onstage alter-ego Ziggy Stardust. Above, a closer look and more information.
The Vans x David Bowie collection is available at select Vans retail stores and here.
It’s only fitting that David Bowie’s first hit Space Oddity takes form on Vans’ first skate shoe, the Classic Era. It gleans from the album cover in its hues of blue-greens and dotted pattern, with the album title also featured on the sides of the shoe.
Next on the timeline, the Hunky Dory sees the Slip-On 47 V in a revised checkerboard pattern based on Bowie’s coat on that album cover, trimmed with yellow suede. “David Bowie” is etched across the pull tab in true old school fashion.
For the Ziggy Stardust homage, the Sk8-Hi Platform 2.0 undergoes a glam rock transformation, emerging with bright red patent leather complete with embossed “Bowie” lettering and black platforms. Definitely something the iconic persona would wear.
Of course, not forgetting Aladdin Sane in the Vans Old Skool style: pearlescent white leather meets the iconic red and blue lightning bolt detail (on the side stripe), just as Bowie’s portrait did on the iconic album cover.
For the Sk8-Hi version of Aladdin Sane, the lightning bolt logo comes in red, together with Bowie lettering printed across Vans’ signature checkerboard print.
The last shoe in the collection ends off aptly inspired by the singer’s very last album Blackstar on Van’s Classic Slip-On model. A single vinyl star sits on canvas and suede uppers while the sole is embossed with more stars. As an additional tribute, the footbed is printed with a galaxy of stars to complete the shoe.
