The outrageously vivid shades punctuating the Fall/Winter 2018 collections can be, well, shocking. Long-sleeved tees and coat linings the colour (and fuzziness) of Sesame Street characters at Balenciaga. These highlighter-hued nylon parkas and matching bucket hats at Prada (which also rendered feminine, ’40s-inspired coats and dresses in the same Day-Glo tones). However playful, fashion’s recent experimentation with colours – pastels in S/S ’18, unexpected combos in F/W ’17 – did not prepare us for this, and perhaps that’s the point. Like in current affairs, conservatism in style still runs high. At least here’s one way in which anyone can make a statement
