The most modern kind of everyday makeup is fresh and so flawlessly natural, it’s HDTV-ready. Moh Shuying singles out the next stars on the scene: five nourishing, lightweight makeup bases that’ll help you ace the barely there look.
#1: Yves Saint Laurent Beaute Fusion Ink Foundation, $89 (as seen on model)
Who said long-lasting makeup has to be heavy? Promising 24-hour coverage, it’s made with a combination of smoothing and essential oils that quickly evaporate when applied, melting into skin within seconds of contact. This unique liquid-to-pigment formula gives such a lightweight coverage, you’ll forget you’re even wearing foundation.
Bonus: Its blend of minerals helps control skin’s oiliness, giving the complexion a fresh, slightly matte appearance.
#2: Diorskin Nude Air Nude Healthy Glow Ultra-Fluid Serum Foundation SPF25/PA++, $88
So light that it’s dispensed with a dropper, this skincare-infused makeup is one of the sheerest foundations we’ve ever come across. According to Peter Philips, Dior Makeup’s creative and image director, the formula is so watery, it can’t be packaged in a cushion compact as it would drip out of the base or disappear into the cushion.
Best applied with your fingers, it feels more like a serum than makeup. Besides creating a wash of nude colour that conceals imperfections without masking skin, it also contains hyper-oxygenated oil packed with air bubbles that supposedly perk up and brighten the complexion.
#3: Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow Foundation SPF25/PA++, $82
With a bouncy gel-emulsion texture that looks – and feels – lighter on skin than in the bottle, this cream will make you look like a better, more radiant version of you.
It doesn’t hide flaws or freckles completely, but instead gives skin a rosy glow. The star ingredient is a booster made with titanium dioxide that absorbs light rays, reflecting their white component to brighten skin, as well as red component to create a soft, pinkish blush. What this means: You can score that on-trend post-workout glow without working out.
#4: Shiseido Synchro Skin Lasting Liquid Foundation SPF20, price unavailable
This smart makeup adapts to skin’s present condition so it’ll always maintain the ideal radiance. Formulated with a mix of sebum-absorbing and light-optimising powders, it makes sure that just the right amount of light is reflected to balance out the amount of sebum on your skin. So when your complexion is dry, for example, the powders reflect more light; when it’s oilier, they become semi-transparent to diffuse light and hide imperfections. Meanwhile polymers in the product repel sweat and oil so skin constantly looks and feels fresh and healthy.
#5: Nars Velvet Matte Skin Tint SPF30, $66 (as seen on model)
The brand’s first BB cream is a new approach to matte skin, creating a dewy luminosity that’s neither oily and shiny, nor flat and cakey.
With the addition of transparent blurring powders, it manipulates and scatters light to make skin look more radiant, mimicking the effect of highlighting powders. At the same time, its oil-free formula has rose fruit extract that acts as an astringent to minimise the appearance of pores and supposedly stop sebum-producing enzymes, as well as vitamins C and E to fight free radical damage and nourish skin, so it feels softer and smoother. All this in a cushiony cream texture that gives coverage that’s lightweight yet buildable.
